Celebrating Head Start Awareness Month with Sheriff Mike Chitwood

There’s a new sheriff in town and the children at the WVEC Head Start center in Deland met him on Wednesday, October, 18th.   Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood stopped by to read a book to the children and deputized them as readers with a badge and other goodies.  Sheriff Mike Chitwood was asked to be the kickoff reader for the Head Start Awareness Month initiative referred to as “Books Building Bridges”. Through this initiative, Head Start programs across the country are partnering with local police departments to ensure that reading and understanding each other are a part of their everyday lives.

We know that reading to children from an early age matters and has a huge impact on future success. We also know that interaction with professionals from the community, especially the police who serve their communities every day, matters. We are so excited that the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department is committed to working with our Head Start program.
